History and gastronomy are two of the things I am passionate about in this life; I can’t help but remember a sunny afternoon when my father, surrounded by friends and laughter, shared the legend of the goddess Venus. It was in that idyllic setting that my father, a man of wisdom and charm, shared with us the history and allure of Venus.
A Heavenly Inspiration
Also known as Aphrodite in Greek mythology, she was much more than just a deity; she was a woman who represented love, beauty and fertility, a figure whose influence transcended the boundaries of Olympus and manifested itself in every corner of the mortal world; She was the very personification of charm and elegance, with a beauty that defied description, her hair was said to be like golden threads swaying in the wind, her skin as soft as the petal of a rose, and her eyes as deep and bright as the stars on a clear night; tall and beautiful as an ivory tower.
Legend has it that Venus emerged from the crystal clear waters, from the depths of the ocean, ascended into the night sky, illuminating the firmament with her celestial radiance. Her beauty was so dazzling that the gods themselves bowed before her, and her mere presence filled the hearts of mortals and divines alike with a deep and eternal longing.
One of Venus’ most notable exploits was her role in the Judgment of Paris, an event that triggered the Trojan War. According to legend, Eris, the goddess of discord, threw a golden apple with the inscription “To the most beautiful” during the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Three goddesses claimed the title: Hera, Athena and Venus. To settle the dispute, Zeus sent Paris, prince of Troy, to choose the most beautiful among the three. Each goddess tried to bribe him, but it was Venus who, promising him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta, finally won the apple and thus triggered a series of events that led to the conflict between Greeks and Trojans.
